Avian Technician – Bloomington, IL (Posted: March 2020)
Shoener Environmental, Inc. is seeking an Avian Technician to join our environmental consulting firm specializing in renewable energy development. This position is for field sites in central Illinois; near Bloomington, Illinois. Avian Technician should live in Bloomington, Peoria, Springfield, Champaign, or nearby area. Primary duties are to conduct avian point counts, and raptor (including eagle) surveys, and data entry/management. There may be the opportunity to participate in additional field work such as wetland delineations, plant surveys, additional avian surveys at other projects in the region. Work is performed alone at remote sites, with early morning hours.

Position is part-time, temporary, from April 2020 – January 2021. There will be approximately 8-9 days of scheduled field work and associated data management per month. Potential for additional hours or extended contract pending availability of work and satisfactory performance. 
 
Minimum Qualifications:

Applicant must be able to demonstrate proven experience identifying birds of the midwestern United States both visually and audibly
and have previous experience performing bird surveys in the United States. Applicant should have or be working toward a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, environmental science or a related field.

Good written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy, willingness to learn new skills, and attention to detail are important. Use of topographic maps, aerial photos, GPS unit, range finder, and other field equipment is required. Proficiency using Microsoft Word and Excel is also required. Applicant should demonstrate the ability to work alone and to maintain focus in an outdoor work environment. Frequent bending, stooping, and walking are required. Candidate will be expected to interact regularly with managers and occasionally with other staff and landowners. Exposure to weather conditions such as high winds, prolonged exposure to intense sunlight, and hot and/or cold temperatures, and high humidity is common. Early mornings or late evenings are expected. Limited weekend and holiday work may be required. The expected daily workload is up to 8-10 hours.

Valid driver’s license required. A company vehicle may be provided or mileage will be reimbursed for travel through the work area. Applicant should have a working cell phone and regular access to internet for communication and data submission.

Desired Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree or higher-level education and 2-3 seasons experience with avian point surveys is desired; experience with large birds (raptors) is preferred.

Willingness/ability to work at a variety of locations or on a variety of ecological survey types is a plus. Field experience conducting surveys for other organisms (e.g., mammals, plants, etc.) or performing wetland delineations is a plus, and may expand the opportunity for additional work tasks or an extension of employment.

​Compensation:  
  • Hourly compensation is commensurate with experience, overtime-eligible. Mileage reimbursement or a company vehicle will be provided.

CIVIL PROJECT ENGINEER – Midwest Region (Posted: September 2019)

Shoener is actively seeking a candidate with excellent communication skills to design and manage our civil engineering projects that are focused in the renewable energy, utility, government, and private land development sectors. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of successful projects, with a demonstrated ability to work well in a team environment.

Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering (MS is a plus)
  • Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Illinois, Indiana and/or Michigan 
  • 6+ years of experience
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills
  • Experience researching and obtaining municipal ordinances and regulations required by jurisdictional agencies
  • Experience in managing budgets/tasks/schedules and dealing with clients directly
  • Demonstrated career growth in civil engineering for a consulting firm
  • Strong knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D and ArcGIS desired. Use of third party applications (AutoTURN, StormCAD, etc.) is a plus.
​Compensation:  The salary for this position is highly competitive and is dependent on experience. Compensation includes a competitive salary, health insurance, 401(k), and paid leave.
