post-construction

Strategically located on the east coast, west coast, and in the Midwest, Shoener offers a full range of services for post-construction monitoring projects throughout the northeast and midwest regions. Shoener has conducted post-construction bird and bat carcass monitoring for over 10 years at wind farms throughout the country.

Our post-construction services range from daily wildlife mortality monitoring to scientific analysis of cutting edge wildlife detectors and deterrents. We can customize our post-construction monitoring services to meet your needs; such as for wind farms, high-voltage power lines or solar farms. Our experienced team also conducts site monitoring of mitigation structures created to replace wildlife (bat, rattlesnake and woodrat) habitat.

Wind Energy Post Construction Bird and Bat Monitoring services:

  • Development of Work Plans
Our work plans spell out exactly what we intend to do through every step of the way, and we follow them. This detail is what is needed to ensure that reviewing agencies are satisfied with the end product of the work.

  • Standard Mortality Transect Surveys
We are versed in a variety of transect survey methods and have spent years refining the methods we use today. Because we have a deep understanding of what works, we can adapt to meet site layouts, agency preferences, and the overarching scope of the monitoring.

  • Sampling Validation Trails (Carcass Removal and Searcher Efficiency)
These trials are an integral part of understanding the mortality levels at a site. It is important that they are as unbiased as possible and best mimic the actual mortality at a facility. We can provide a validation program that is robust and meets your needs.

  • Raptor Use Surveys
Human-based impacts to hawks, eagles, vultures, and other raptors are a growing concern across North America. We can design and implement surveys studying raptor use patterns throughout all portions of the year, and are able to focus survey efforts on your data needs. This includes nest surveys (both ground and aerial methods), migration counts, and structured use studies.

  • Acoustical Surveys
The acoustic survey technique is an effective method that can provide bat and bird community indices, confirm or suggest a probability of presence or absence of sensitive species, and is relatively non-intrusive. Shoener can design and implement your next acoustic monitoring study.

  • Breeding Bird Surveys
We have diverse experience in ornithological surveys, including breeding bird inventories. These studies help identify suitable habitats and presence of breeding birds.

  • Management Strategies
If your activities affect wildlife, you will likely need a plan to minimize or offset those impacts. We have experience in developing Bird and Bat Conservation Strategies and Habitat Conservation Plans, which detail the observed or expected impacts of a project and outline a plan to avoid, minimize, and mitigate the impacts.

  • Mitigation Monitoring
We can implement a plan to monitor the effectiveness of a mitigation strategy. Past projects include assessing effects of turbine curtailment regimes, habitat suitability assessments, and bat roost assessments.
